Learning Objectives
The main goal of the course is to illustrate the fundamental concepts of psychodynamic psychotherapy (transference/countertransference, therapeutic alliance, interpretation, resistance, etc.) and of the interventions and techniques adopted. The concepts will be discussed following a multiple perspective:
- theoretical,
- clinical,
- empirical.
Specifically, the course aims to provide knowledge and understanding in a psychodynamic perspective of:
- the main theories of therapeutic action;
- the results of empirical research on the effectiveness of the treatments ;
- neuroscientific bases of the main constructs;
- criticalities of clinical intervention, starting with the patient's evaluation;
- some intervention models for specific disorders or clinical populations.
Program
- The initial part of the course will focus on the presentation of the fundamental concepts of psychodynamic therapy, with a particular attention on therapist’s interventions (interpretation, clarification, etc.) and on the therapeutic relationship (transference/countertransference, therapeutic alliance, projective identification, etc.).
- The central part of the course will be dedicated to the illustration of the empirical research in psychodynamic psychotherapy and specifically on research on the most relevant construct for the subject (therapeutic alliance, reflective function, defense mechanisms, etc.).
- The final part of the course will be dedicated to the analysis of specific dynamic treatment modalities in relation to specific diseases such as Borderline Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Depressive Disorder.

Knowledge and understanding
In relation to the discipline the student must show competence on:
- the knowledge of the specific discipline;
- the comprehension of the advanced concepts of the subject;
Applying knowledge and understanding
- Knowledge and understanding of the concepts and theories provided by the course;
- Capacity to use the knowledges and concepts to reason autonomously on the problematics of the subject according to a triple perspective: theoretical, clinical and research..
Making judgements
- Ability to explain key elements of psychodynamic psychotherapy;
- Ability to autonomously integrate knowledge gained in reasoning on conditions of clinical, theoretical and empirical interest based on information relating
Communication skills
- Ability to analyze psychodynamic psychotherapy concepts and technical principles of intervention;
- Ability to read and to interpret empirical research results.
The student must be able to build his or her path in a critical and independent way, being able to use the material provided by the teacher. These skills, as much as possible, will be encouraged by the teacher. These will also be explained and discussed by the students during the lessons.

- Assessment
The objectives are verified with an oral exam. The evaluation criteria are:
- significance and effectiveness of the responses in relation to the content of the program; Ability to identify links and connections; Level of response articulation; Adequacy of the language used.
The final evaluation is expressed in marks ranging from one to thirty.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
