Learning Objectives

To provide the basic "Know-How" for the correct use of synthetic and natural.
In the Chemotherapy section the therapeutic application, the problem of resistence, the mechanisms of action and side effects of antiparasitic, antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral and antineoplastic agents will be analyzed.

Program

Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy of protozoal infections (malaria, amebiasis, trichomoniasis, trypanosomiasis). General considerations of antimicrobial therapy: sulfonamides and quinolones. ?-lactam antibiotics, penicillins and cephalosporins. Aminoglycosides. Protein synthesis inhibitors. Chemotherapy of tuberculosis. Antifungal agents. Antiviral and antiretroviral agents. Antineoplastic agents.

Bridging Courses

It is highly suggested to previously pass the following exams: Biochemistry Plant Biology and Pharmaceutical Botany and Microbiology.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

At the end of the course, students should have knowledge of the different class of chemotherapeutic agents, the different mechanisms of action and their therapeutic use in relation to type of microrganism determining the infection.

Oral examination

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
