Learning Objectives
The course aims to give students a methodological training and basic statistics, not separated from the acquisition of an operational capability in the face of real problems
Program
1. Outline of probability.
2. Population and sample.
3. Measuring scale variables.
4. Main indices of position (arithmetic mean, median and mode)
and dispersion (variation range, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation,
quartiles, interquartile range).
5. bivariate statistics: regression and correlation.
6. Main distributions: Binomial, Poisson, Gaussian.
7. The sampling distributions: distribution of the sample mean and t-distribution.
8. Test: the z test; the Student t test (for one and two samples).
9. Confidence intervals for the means and proportions.
10. Anova and nonparametric statistics
11. The scientific method and unscientific methods
12. The research protocol
13. The rationale
14. The literature search
15. Randomization
16. Blindness
17. Experimental design
18. Sample size
19. Assessment tools and their properties: reliability, validity, responsiveness, least significant difference, sensitivity and specificity
20. Deviations from the protocol and their treatment
21. Critical reading a scientific paper

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
In relation to statistics for biomedical sciences, students should show possession of:
D1 - the mastery of basic skills;
D2 - the understanding of the fundamental concepts of the discipline
D3 - the ability to use knowledge and concepts to reason according to the logic of the discipline
D4 - the ability to communicate to specialist and non-specialist audiences
D5 - the ability to study in an autonomous manner
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Supporting Activities
Seminars; guided exercises

- Assessment
Written test; the oral exam is optional (after passing the written test)
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
