Learning Objectives
Through a training curriculum that introduces mapping of landforms and related continental deposits, this course aims to teach students to perform geomorphological analyses addressed to environmental management and planning, evaluation of environmental hazard and exploitation of natural resources.
Program
References to basic geomorphological concepts.
Environment, territory, landscape; hazard, vulnerability, risk.
Geomorphological convergences and indicators
Landforms recognition and geomorphological processes interpretation on aerial photos.
Introduction to the study of Quaternary continental deposits
Application of Geomorphology to environmental management and planning, ecology, preservation of cultural and historical heritage and archeology.
Geomorphological heritage: geomorphosites and geodiversity.
Traditional mapping of landforms and Quaternary continental deposits for applied aims.
Bridging Courses
Geomorphology
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding. At the end of the course the student must have achieved a thorough knowledge of the subject and be able to identify, classify and map the main forms of relief and related deposits in hillslope, fluvial and littoral environments.
Applying knowledge and understanding. At the end of the course the student must be able to map and understand origin, evolution and chronological sequence of landforms and related deposits, also expressing them in terms of environmental hazard and resource.
Making judgements. At the end of the course the student must have acquired an autonomous skill to recognize and map the landforms and related deposits of a given area to different -both active and relict- morphogenetic mechanisms, as well to outline the evolution trend of the same and evaluate them in terms of environmental hazard and/or resource.
Communication skills. At the end of the course the student must have achieved a good expertise to cartographic restitution of landforms and related deposits, as well to communicate his own knowledge and appraisals in a clear way and exposing them with appropriate language and examples.
Learning skills. At the end of the course the student must have attained a good degree of autonomy in both elaborating cartographic and descriptive syntheses of the landforms and related deposits forming a given territory, as well to establish criteria and search information suitable for a proper environmental management.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Lectures. Practice in the field and in laboratory.
- Attendance
An individual project of geomorphological mapping with a final report and discussion is required.
- Course books
PANIZZA M. (2016) – Manuale di Geomorfologia Applicata. Franco Angeli Editore, 536 pp.
D’OREFICE M., GRACIOTTI R. (2015) – Rilevamento geomorfologico e cartografia. Dario Flaccovio Editore, 359 pp.
*CARRARO (2012) – Geologia del Quaternario. Dario Flaccovio Editore, 393 pp.
*consultation textbook for problems related to Quaternary continental deposits
- Assessment
Learning outcomes will be evaluated through an oral examination consisting of a minimum of three questions. The aim of the assessment is to evaluate the understanding and mastery of the topics of the program, the achievement of an adequate presentation skill and of an appropriate technical language. In the oral examination the binding individual project of geomorphological mapping will be also discussed. The grades are on a scale of 30.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
