Learning Objectives
Acquisition of the theoretical knowledge and of the practical skills at the basis of the main data analysis techniques . At the end of the course , the student will be able to recognize which statistical approach has to be adopted in specific contexts and to comment on the results of these analyses .
Program
The program is divided into 13 topics : 1 . introduction and rkey concepts : measurement scales , indicators of central tendency , variability indicators , graphical methods for the exploration of data (lecture 1-2) 2 . simple regression (lecture 3-4). 3 multiple regression (lecture 5-6). 4. Comparing Means : t - test 5 (lecture 7). Comparing Means : one-way ANOVA (lecture 7) 6. General linear model: factorial ANOVA between- subjects (lecture 8) 7 . Post- Hoc Comparisons: the problem of multiple comparisons and of statistical power (lecture 9). 8 General Linear Model: Model Assumptions (lecture 10) 9. Nonparametric tests (lecture 11) 10 . Factor analysis 11 (lecture 12-13-14). Subject assessment: assessment tools , reliability and validity (lecture 15-16) 12 . Statistics applied to neuropsychology and psicodiagnosis (lecture 17) 13 Methods for the study of individual patients (lecture 18).

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
The student must show that he has
- Knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts of hypothesis verification and statistical tests in the theoretical framework of the general linear model
- Applied knowledge and understanding: acquired the ability to recognize which statistical approach to use in different practical contexts
- Making judgements: Acquired the ability to use knowledge and concepts for describing the results of the main statistics used in the psychological field
- Communication skills: acquired specific lexicon for the description of psychometric results
- Learning Skills: At the completion of the course students will have gained a good degree of autonomy in reading the materials related to the validation of psychometric tests and in the critical understanding of the adequacy of the statistical analyzes reported in the psychological research.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Supporting Activities
There are 5 practical lessons (using the PC) to illustrate
1) How to build a database for psychological research?
2) How to perform the statistical analyses described in the front lessons
3) How the results of these analyses should be read and reported
Practical lessons are essential for passing exams
In addition, a seminar is planned for the practical demonstration of the psychophysiological testing and correction of neuropsychological tests. The seminar will be held by Dr. Mapelli
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Theorethical and practical lectures
- Attendance
Not mandatory
- Course books
1) Book: Gallucci, Leone e Berlingeri “Modelli statistici per le scienze sociali” (II edizione)
Additional material
2) software R-commander: http://cran.r-project.org/doc/contrib/Karp-Rcommander-intro.pdf
- Assessment
The exam consists of two tests,
1) Written multiple structured answer test to assess the knowledge and arguments that will be dealt with in the different parts of the course. The test consists of 30 questions, each question includes 4 alternatives. Each question has a value of 1 point. There is no penalty in case of an incorrect response. The student has 60 minutes to complete this test.
2) Written commentary of a series of statistical analyses. In this case the student is provided with the results of a series of statistical analyses carried out for psychological research. It requires the student to produce, for each reported result, a written comment using a specific language. The student has 60 minutes.
In order to pass the examination it is necessary to take at least 18 in both tests, the final vote will be given by the average of the marks obtained in the two trials.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
