Learning Objectives

The course aims to stimulate the students' attitude of attention to the chemical phenomenon and to provide the

basic knowledge necessary to operate safely in a chemical laboratory. The conduction of experiments with the most common techniques of chemical laboratory, the analysis and interpretation of the data, will be taught to students through a series of practical experience.

Each student will receive the protocol of the exercise and he will have to register each experiment in the laboratory notebook. There will be introductory lessons before the laboratory.

Program

The course consists of theoretical and practical lessons.
1. Safety procedures in the chemistry laboratory. Logistics and laboratory first aid kit; reagents; disposal of toxic waste and biological agents.
2. Instruments commonly used in the laboratory. technical and analytical scales; vortex, shaking and heating plates; glassware, centrifuges, etc..
3. Glassware washing and sterilization. Preparation of glassware; treatment tips; solutions filtration.
4. Errors in measurement. Precision and accuracy.
5. Measurements of weight and volume. Using scales. Volume measurements using precision and glass pipettes.
6. Solutions. The concentration of the solutions. Concentrated solutions and dilution procedures. 7. Use of pH indicators and measurement of pH. Instrumental measurement of pH.
8. Neutralization titrations: titration strong acid-strong base and weak acid-strong base.
9.Buffers and pH indicators. Preparation of buffer solutions. Titration curve of a weak acid with a strong base.
10. Solubility and Kps. Purification of a weak monoprotic acid.
11. Thin layer chromatography. Extraction and chromatographic separation of pigments contained in plants.

12. Analysis of olive oil.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

In relation to discipline the student must show :

-a solid knowledge of basic chemistry;

-the ability to use the acquired knowledge  in all laboratory activities.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Lectures and laboratory activities.

Attendance

Students are required to attend at least 2/3 of the lessons.

Course books

The course material will be provided by the teacher during the course.

For further discussion, we recommend:

E.Benedetti, V.Cucinotta, P.Giannetto et al.-"Chimica in Laboratorio:Fondamenti ed esercitazioni"- Editoriale Grasso

Assessment

The exam consists of a written and oral test to verify the acquisition and implementation of course content.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
