Learning Objectives

The course is meant for students who already have gained at least a rudimentary knowledge of Classical Latin. The teacher will lead them to a closer familiarity with the aforementioned language by focusing on peculiar problems of pronounce, morphology, syntax and lexicon.

Program

Subject of the course will be two texts, one in prose and one in poetry, during the reading of which, while privileging the exegesis of the text, will be addressed phonetics, morphology, syntax. The teacher will offer a thorough survey and commentary to Plauto, Menaechmi (vv. arg. 1-10, 77-273, 486-523, 701-752, 808-875, 889-967, 1062-1083) and to Livio, Ad Urbe condita, liber I (cap. 34-35; 39-42; 46-48; 57-59). 

Bridging Courses

PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE OF LATIN LANGUAGE.

Students must possess an adequate knowledge of the Latin language, guaranteed by a written, compulsory and preparatory assessment test to take the exam. Based on the topics covered in the basic Latin extracurricular training course, on which detailed information will be available both on the site of the School of Letters Arts Philosophy and on the Blended Learning platform (Moodle), this test will consist of questions on morphology and syntax of the Latin language and in the translation of a passage taken from the work of an author of Latin literature. In order to take the test, the student will have two dates available during the academic year, which will be set in a period immediately preceding the scheduled exams at the end of the first and second semesters and communicated both on the site of the School of Lettere Arti Filosofia both on the Blended Learning platform (Moodle). The results of the test will be made available on the Blended Learning platform (Moodle).

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The student will acquire a basic but solid knowledge of Classical Latin, including phonetics, morphology, syntax, and is able to translate and comment upon the required text.

Knowledge and understanding. At the end of the course the student knows: 1) elements of phonetics of the Latin language 2) the morphology, syntax and the most common lexicon of the Latin language 3) some basic elements of language history necessary for a full understanding of the morphological structures more important.

Applying knowledge and understanding. At the end of the course the student has also acquired the following skills: 1) knows how to pronounce the Latin language correctly 2) knows how to recognize and describe the main morphosyntactic structures 3) correctly know nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs 4) knows how to translate and analyze texts Note.

Making judgments. At the end of the course the student must be able to formulate an autonomous translation.

Communication skills.  The student must know how to express himself in a clear and conscious way.

Learning skills.  Like all other disciplines, the study of Latin also contributes to the acquisition of learning, analysis and synthesis skills necessary both to continue the course of studies and to integrate profitably into the world of work.

The students will be asked to translate and comment upon a selection of lines of Plauto, Menaechmi, and Livio, I, with a peculiar focus on problems of Latin grammar.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
