Learning Objectives
The Philosophy of Culture course aims to delineate and analytically and critically outline the relationship between culture, philosophy and politics in the diagnosis that Dilthey, Simmel, Gadamer and Habermas make of the understanding of the human and of the destiny of modernity.
Program
- Between Dilthey and Habermas. Twentieth century and beyond.
- Georg Simmel, a century later. Between culture, philosophy and politics.
- Between Dilthey and Gadamer. The hermeneutical philosophy of understanding.
- The first Habermas. Critical theory, classics and contemporaneity.
- Jürgen Habermas. Understanding of the human and the destiny of modernity.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
With regards to the discipline, the student has to show the possession of:
- the mastery of basic knowledge;
- the understanding of the fundamentals of the discipline;
- the capacity of using skills and concepts according to the logic of the discipline.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Supporting Activities
During the course there will be interdisciplinary integrative seminars held by prof. Antonio De Simone and the philosophy research doctors Davide D'Alessandro and Alberto Simonetti. A seminar-study seminar on the theme "Georg Simmel, a century later, is also planned during the first semester (Wednesday 10 October 2018). Between culture, philosophy and politics "with the participation of Italian and foreign scholars.

Frontal lessons, tutorials and scientific-educational seminars integrating in-depth study.

Class attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended.

Oral exam.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
