Learning Objectives

The purpose of this course is to supply theoretical and practical mastery and competence, necessary for the basic operations in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of   pharmaceuticals and toxic substances.

Program

Theoretical basis.

-Rules of security in the laboratories. Organisation. Equipments and instrumentation. Behavior.

-Basic techniques and operations: solubility, dilution, concentration; precipitation, settling, filtration, centrifugation,  extraction.

-Analyses of inorganic ions of pharmaceutical and toxicological interest.

-Chromatographic techniques; notes concerning the separation mechanisms; adsorption,  partition,  exclusion, affinity,  ion-exchange.

-Planar chromatography, paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography.

-Acid-base titrations in aqueous and non aqueous solutions; complexometric, red-ox and   gravimetric titrations.

-Treatment of analytical data and application to the drug analysis.

Practical exercises.

-Separation and identification of cations and anions of pharmaceutical and toxicological interest. Analytical determinations by FU assays.

-TLC and HPTLC applications.

-Preparation of solutions and dilution.

-Quantitative analysis performed by titrations.

Bridging Courses

To take the exam of Analysis of Drugs I you must have passed the examination of General and Inorganica Chemistry and of Analytical Chemistry.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Students must demonstrated that they have acquired mastery of thecniques applicable to the qualitative analysis of pharmaceutical substances and the quantitative analysis to determine the concentration of active ingredients in pharmaceutical products, applying classical and instrumental analysis methods.

Assessment

Oral examination

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
