Program

Principles of radiation physics: structure of the atom, the stable and unstable nucleus, the radioactive decay and decay general equation, half life, specific activity. Interaction of radiation with matter, penetrating and non penetrating radiation.
Dosimetry: absorbed dose, equivalent dose and effective dose, biologic effects of ionization radiation.
Radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine: generality
Radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic in nuclear medicine: scintillation imaging, SPET and PET, general properties of radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic, gamma and positron emitter radiopharmaceuticals.
Radioterapy: methods, radiopharmaceuticals for metabolic radioterapy.
Evaluation of the risk of adverse reactions.
Production of radionuclides for radiopharmaceuticals.
Quality control and Quality Assurance.
Radiopharmacy.

Regulatory requirements.

Bridging Courses

Highly recommended having passed the exam of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry 1 to acquire the knowledge / skills necessary for a better understanding of the course.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

At the end of course the student will have to show:

A) to know the fundamental principles of radiation physics and effects of radiation; the main radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine for diagnosis and therapy;the main adverse reactions; basic knowledge on preparation and quality control of radiopharmaceuticals used for diagnosis and therapy in nuclear medicine; the main regulatory issues
B) to have acquired applicative skills concerning the preparation and quality control of radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with regulations for clinical activity and for clinical trials
C) to be able to assess and solve problems autonomously related to the course content
D) to have developed oral and written communication skills suited to the presentation of the concepts acquired
E) to be able to explore the topics in different contexts and autonomously

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
