Learning Objectives
The aim of the course of Biochemistry is that of describing and explaining the biological phenomena in chemical terms. Therefore, the course must be approached by students with a sound background of general and organic chemistry. The knowledge of the fundaments of biology is also required.
Program
The course begins by underlying the importance to acquire the biochemical terminology and to gain access to the main sources of modern scientific information. Thereafter, the general principles of chemical bonds and chemical reactions involving biomolecules within cells and organisms are taken into account (structure and catalysis). It follows the study of the energetic metabolism by examining the catabolic and anabolic pathways of the biomolecules, their mutual relationships, the biomedical aspects of their defects. Notions are given on reactive oxygen species formation and its relevance on cell damages and organism ageing.
The third part of the course is devoted to the conservation and to the transmission of the biological information (DNA, RNA, protein synthesis, virus and nucleic acids technology). Some aspects of cell growth and differenziation and their relation to tumor development are also briefly examined.
Each part of the subject having relation to the course of Applied Biochemistry is highlighted and pertinent information are provided (technology and biomedical applications).
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
