Learning Objectives

The course will direct students to the knowledge of the history of the main artistic techniques through the analysis of some artifacts of great value, the main engraving techniques and the graphic production outcomes of artists active between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries.

Program

The course is divided into two parts. In the first, dedicated to the history of design, we will look at materials, techniques and graphic typologies; the evolution of design in the activity of some artists (Pisanello, Botticelli, Perugino, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Andrea del Sarto, Pontormo, the Carracci, etc.); the consideration it reached in the artistic literature and with some big collectors.

In the second part, dedicated to the History of artistic techniques, we will analyze the development of techniques related to painting (wall, on wood, on canvas), sculpture (marble, bronze and wood) and some applied arts (tapestry, inlaid woodwork, ceramics, etc.), together with the sources discussing them.  Considerable space will also be devoted to the main engraving techniques (woodcut, chiseling, etching) with the analysis of the most important prints of all time.

Classroom lectures will be supplemented by meetings with various specialists and by guided tours of art collections, especially of the local territory.
