The course on Political Thought of Globalization aims to offer to the students a general and critical knowledge of the political (and also partially economical, juridical and social) phenomenons of the global age; at the same time, it aims to give the students the basic tools in order to understand the fundamental changing of the modern political lexicon and its concepts, such as nation-state, citizenship, democracy, civil society and so on.

From a methodological perspective, the course is organized in order to allow the students to afford the analysis of some recent events by reading and discussing in the class newspaper articles or journal essays.

Karl Marx was not only the principal critic of capitalist society, but also the one who took the global character of the former. This intuition was subsequently taken up by numerous scholars, who in the last few decades have discovered an important anticipation of some aspects of the present globalization in Marxian reflection: firstly, the tendency of capital to expand itself into every nation and among every people, and secondly, that of overcoming the boundaries between states in the name of creating a world market, in which goods, money and labor power circulate without barriers.

This course is divided into two parts. The first part aims to retrace some of Marx's analysis of the creation of the world market and the theory of colonization, starting from the writings on the political and economic development of some extra-European countries, in particular India and China.

The second part takes into consideration the contemporary revival of some Marxian themes in the political and sociological debate in India and China, through the work of the Indian political philosopher Dipesh Chakrabarty and the Chinese sociologist of labor Pun Ngai.

At the end of the course the students must have developed the following abilities and competences:

1. contextualize the comlexity of the studied topics and recongnize them in similar political and social situations;

2. clearly communicate to expert and non-expert interlocutors the theoretical achievements of the studied analysis, by a genetical reconstrucion and a focusing on the problematic issues;

3. acquire a critical and autonomous ablity to afford social and political themes (both in method and in contents) similar to those considered duting the course.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Whenever any set text is not procurable, it will be made available in Pdf format on the Moodle platform of the course.

Mainly frontal lecture, with the possibility for the students to intervene with detailed studies and in collective discussions.

Morevore, it is expected that during the course some scholars from the University of Urbino or from other universities will be invited to give lectures about topics related to the course subjects.

Assessment

Oral examinations, directed to verify both the ability to synthesize information and the comunicative and the expressive skills of the students, as well as the achievement of the suitable political language.

During the classes there will be the possibiliy for the students to present a paper and/or give a lecture on specific subjects, which will contribute to determine the final grade.

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
