Learning Objectives

The course introduces students to the main theories of translation, linking this knowledge with the practice of translating. Translation concerns the dialogue between different cultures and educates to a form of linguistic hospitality. Consequently, it concerns the relationship with the Other, determining the way in which individuals and cultures build their identity in a process that involves difference, resemblance and mediation. The course intends to deepen the reflection that derives from this idea of translation, developing five thematic units: translation as an interpretative act; translation as a cultural process; ideology in translation; translation strategies; editorial translation and translator training

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

a) The student must know the main theoretical topics of contemporary translation theories and be able to relate the various conceptual topics.
b) The student must be able to apply the acquired knowledge to the translation practice and to the textual analysis.
c) Starting from what has been learned, the student must be able to develop a personal reflection on translation.
d) The student must be able to convey the contents learned in a clear and complete way even to non-specialists and he/she must also acquire an autonomous learning capacity.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
