Learning Objectives
Development of the autonomous critical skills of the student, basic knowledge of the history of Chinese thought and of its implication in the acquaintance with Chinese people, ability to challenge both positive and negative stereotypes.
Program
Basic knowledge of the history of Chinese thought - esp. Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism and Neoconfucianisms -, and of its actual developments. Understanding of the history of the cultural contacts between China and Europe since the Romans and particularly in the modern age, with a special focus on the elaboration of the Oriental disciplines (Sinology and Chinese philosophy) within European culture. Focus on the consequences of the prejudicial definitions of this "Oriental thought" based on the assumption of "alterity" or "otherness" (East) as the opposite of the "self" (West). A general outline of the concept of religion as applied to the Chinese context, a few cultural elements of Chinese "religious" and "folk" culture.
Bridging Courses
No previous knowledge of Chinese studies is mandatory.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
- Knowledge and understanding: the student reaches a basic knowledge of Chinese thought and he is aware of differences and similarietis with Western thought.
- Applying knowledge and understanding: the student develops a critical ability in the analysis of a philosophical text that he would apply at any field of the Chinese Studies.
- Making judgements: the student can question autonumously a philosophical and cultural content, fully aware of his cultural assumptions.
- Communication skills: the student is able to discuss and debate orally an intercultural and philosophical thesis.
- Learning skills: the student acquires the metodological skills and the biblio-critical competences necessary in the future writing of a degree thesis.

The exam is an oral discussion, the student needs the full study of the core manual (also in other languages than Italian) and he has to comment a few philosophical texts.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
