Learning Objectives

Teach the principle concepts of Hydrogeology as well as an awareness of the main problems involved in the manaagement of groundwater. The course includes lectures and practical exercises both in class and in the field.

Program

Hydrologic cycle: measurement system and data availability. The groundwater system in the hydrologic cycle. Physical structure and hydraulic properties of porous media. Darcy’s law. Type of aquifers. Water flow in unconfined and confined aquifers. Water wells and groundwater flow to wells. Pumping tests under unsteady and steady conditions, step drawdown test (SDT). Springs: classifications, discharge and depletion curve. Criteria for underground and surface water quality. Pollution of underground water, origin and main pollution mode. Saline water intrusion. Italien groundwater law.  Exercises: hydrogeological prospecting. Hydrogeological maps, reconstruction and interpretation of water table. Elaboration and interpretation of thematic mapping

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Comprehension of basic concepts of groundwater flow and dynamics, evaluation of water budget components. Reading and interpretation of hydrogeological maps, direct measurements on field of hydrological parameters.

Assessment

Oral exam

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
