Learning Objectives
The course provides the students with an introductory knowledge on the philosophy of the social sciences and the main theoretical traditions of sociology. A first aim is to equip the students with a basic epistemological toolkit enabling them to understand the main paradigms and the proper language of sociological theory. A second aim is to make the students acquainted with different traditions in sociological theory, and with their corresponding leading authors, works, issues and explanatory logics .
Program
The first part of the course is dedicated to introducing the fundamentals of the philosophy of social science (basic concepts, the relation between epistemology and theory-building, method disputes and epistemological debates). The second part of the course presents the main currents in sociological theory (theories of rational choice, functionalism, evolutionary theories, conflict theories, symbolic interactionism, phenomenology).
