Level C2 - Proficient User

The aim of the course is to bring students to a full C2 level as described in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

The global scale of the common reference of the CEFR defines level C2's user capable of the following linguistic skills:

• Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.

• Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.

• Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

   

  The CEFR describe level C2's user capable of carrying out the following linguistic skills:

• Understanding - Listening 

I have no difficulty in understanding any kind of spoken language, whether live or broadcast, even when delivered at fast native speed, provided I have some time to get familiar with the accent.

• Understanding - Reading

I can read with ease virtually all forms of the written language, including abstract, structurally or linguistically complex texts such as manuals, specialized articles and literary words.

• Speaking – Spoken interaction

I can express myself fluently and convey finer shades of meaning precisely. If I do have a problem I can backtrack and restructure around the difficulty so smoothly that other people are hardly aware of it.

• Speaking – Spoken production

I can present a clear, smoothly flowing description or argument in a style appropriate to the context and with an effective logical structure which helps the recipient to notice and remember significant points.

• Writing – Writing

I can write clear, smoothly flowing text in an appropriate style. I can write complex letters, reports or articles which present a case with an effective logical structure which helps the recipient to notice and remember significant points. I can write summaries and reviews of professional or literary works.

Programme

The course is designed to allow TEFLI II students to work and build to a C2 level of English using a wide variety of sources - media, literature, film, TV encompassing among others - dialogue, monologue, narrative, essays, commentary, instruction, presentation. Areas of interest Multimodal Analysis. Students will study key concepts in multimodality and look at how language, images and other modes of communication, such as advertising, films, pictures, illustrations, audio, colors, etc., combine to make meaning. Students will be able to analyse and interpret a multimodal text making reference to the combinations of modes used and to the message/s it conveys.

TRANSLATION SKILLS

Students will:

1) practice translation from Italian to English.

2) gain experience translating a variety of documents and developing their linguistic abilities.

3) gain a basic understanding of basic translation method and theory

4) become more aware of the differences between basic English and Italian structures

5) begin to understand how to tackle the process of revising their translations

6) move beyond the idea of a literal translation and begin to create more appropriate and effective

7) objectively evaluate their own language level and their ability to choose appropriate verb forms when translating

8) identify topics in contrastive grammar that they need to continue to focus on throughout the year

9) correctness in grammar and use of English and conservation of meaning are the most important elements to be considered.

ASSIGNMENT

Students are expected, in their own interest, to submit 2 pieces of written work assignments, 1 at least per semester, as well as sometimes work on some pre-lesson preparation. 

The teaching material prepared by the language assistant in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the language assistant specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Students are NOT expected to purchase a textbook.

EXAMS 

WRITTEN EXAM - There are two parts to this exam.

Part 1- TRANSLATION

You must complete the translation from Italian to English (250-300 words)

Part 2- COMPOSITION

You must choose ONE of the following: 

Part 2a - Analysis and Interpretation of a Multimodal Text  (500 words in English)

OR

Part 2b - Write a composition of 500 words in English (the topic will be given to you)

ORAL EXAM ( with the Monographic)

Students will prepare one of the following
