Learning Objectives
To learn the therapeutic application, the problem of resistance, the mechanisms of action and side effects of antiparasitic, antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral and antineoplastic agents will be analyzed.
Program
General considerations of antimicrobial therapy: sulfonamides and quinolones. Beta-lactam antibiotics, penicillins and cephalosporins. Cell wall inhibitors. Aminoglycosides. Protein synthesis inhibitors. Chemotherapy of tuberculosis. Antifungal agents. Antiviral and antiretroviral agents. Antineoplastic agents. Chemotherapy of protozoal infections .
Bridging Courses
It is highly suggested to have previously passed the exam of Microbiology.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
At the end of the course, students should demonstrate to possess:
-a robust knowledge of the general principles of chemo-antiobiotic therapy as well as of the different classes of antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents and their therapeutic use in relation to type of the infection/infestion or of the type of tumor.
-the scientific backround needed to evaluate the proper use and prescription of the chemo-antibiotic agents in a professional setting.
-critical and competent assessment capacity with regard to the issues typical of the discipline
-effective communication skills in chemo-antibiotic therapy
-strong learning capacity to attend continuous formation and update in chemo-antiobiotic therapy .
