Learning Objectives
Aim of the course is providing concepts, methods and instruments of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), indispensable for a modern management of geographical data, in particular in the geological-environmental field. Each lesson presents a theoretical and a practical session. These practical applications of knowledge are an essential educational element to provide the necessary skills for a proper assessment of the environmental variables.
Program
The course is based on the fundamental concepts of geographic information systems and develops methods available to perform spatial analysis. The course will cover both theoretical aspects and practical application in the main fields of geosciences.
The course deals with the following topics:
Management of geographical data
- gathering, creation and organization of data;
- view and edit tools;
- table management;
- query by attribute and by location;
- conversion tools.
Geoprocessing of geographical data
- Geoprocessing tools;
- Environmental indexes and editing of thematic maps;
- Topology.
Spatial analysis of geographical data
- Interpolation;
- digital terrain model creation;
- surface analyses;
- raster data reclass;
- geostatisitcal tools.
Bridging Courses
See bridging courses in School programme
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
The student has to demonstrate basic knowledge regarding management, geoprocessing and spatial analysis of geographical data with particular reference to the processing of geological data.
The student has to demonstrate understanding and implementation capacity of main methods of exploration, production and analysis of spatial data as well as to be able to produce summary documents.
The student has to demonstrate to manage and develop the topics of the course, providing problem solving for management, valorisation and assessment of environmental issues.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Supporting Activities
Materials for practical exercises will be provide from teacher. On request additional material for supplementary exercises and meeting for the design of individual projects to be presented during the examination.

- Teaching
Lectures with practical exercises
- Attendance
Attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended.
- Course books
- Exercises provided by the teacher
- De Smith M., Googchild M.F., Longley P.A. (2015) – Geospatial Analysis. A comprehensive guide to principles, techniques and software tools. http://www.spatialanalysisonline.com/index.html
- Assessment
Oral exam preceded by practical test regarding the realisation and presentation of an individual project
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
