Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide the fundamental knowledge of General Microbiology allowing students to understand the main role of microorganisms in different fields of human activities, including biotechnology.

4- Structure and functions of prokaryotic cell

4.1 – Bacterial multiplication

5- Fungi: morphology and reproduction

6- Basics of protozoa

7- Virus

7.1-  Eukaryotic viruses and bacteriophages

8- Bacterial nutrition and metabolism

8.1- Culture media

8.2- Tecniques for assessment of microbial growth

9- Enrironmental conditions for microbial growth

10- Control and inhibition of microbial growth

10.1- Antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance

11- Energetic metabolism: aerobia and anaerobic respiration, fermentation

12- Rensponse to environmental stress: endospores and Viable But Not Culturable forms

13- Quorum sensing and microbial biofilms

14- Bacterial genetics

14.1- Bacterial genetic recombination: transformation, transduction and conjugation

15- Symbiosis: commensalism, mutualism, parasitism

16- Fundamentals of immunology: aspecific and specific immunity.

Laboratory sessions of microscopy, culture media preparation, microbial identification, bacterial cell count.
