Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide basic notions related to the transmission of texts (manuscripts and printed) and to their philological analysis. Several philological methodologies will be illustrated with special attention to the methods of Lachmann and Bédier and how they were applied to some works of the Italian literature from the origins until the modern age. Some lessons will be devoted to the authorial philology.
Program
The course will be divided into two parts: 1) An overview of some disciplines directly related to philology, such as paleography and codicology; basic notions about the text transmission (manuscripts and printed texts), about the Lachmann' s method (its characteristics and application) and about that of Bédier; notions of authorial philology. 2) Analysis of some of the most significant critical editions of the Italian literature from the Origins to the Modern Era. In the final part of the course, under the guide of the teacher, students will produce a critical edition.
