Learning Objectives

This course will provide the student with a basic knowledge of the English language.

Program

The course will commence with a placement test strongly recommended for ALL students.  The placement test will take place on 7th October 2020, in the Sala Incisori di Legato Albani Piazza della repubblica, 13.  This will enable the student to verify his/her level of English.  Students with a result of A1 and A2 are advised to attend the course; students with a result of B1 or higher are nevertheless encouraged to attend, since, as well as offering an invaluable opportunity to interact with a native speaker, the course will provide terminology specifically for Education Science.

The course will commence on 7th October 2020.
There will be 4 hours of lessons per week from 7th October to 10th December 2020.

It will consist of all four abilities of English Language teaching (ELT) - Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

The methodology will be a combination of individual, pair and group work.


 

Bridging Courses

Students are advised to undertake independent study following the materials made available on blended.uniurb.it.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

On completion of the course students will have acquired the following skills:

1. Competence in basic elements grammar, to enable the correct use in both written and spoken language.
2. The ability to read, understand and answer comprehension questions on texts based on educational topics in English.
3. The knowledge of basic education-based vocabulary.
4. The ability to talk about, discuss and give opinions on topics based on education and dealt with in class.  

All of the above-listed competences should be obtained by attending lessons and optional tutorials.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

Supplementary language lessons are available on a weekly basis with Prof.ssa Patricia Barzotti (Wednesdays 11-13).  Free English courses are available at the Centro Linguistico Ateneo (CLA).  Information can be found on the website cla.uniurb.it.


Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Interactive frontal lessons with group and pair work. Simple presentations.

Attendance

While attendance is not compulsory it is strongly recommended, both for students with a minimal level of English and for students with a higher level, who can use this opportunity to revise, interact with native speaker teachers and and learn specific vocabulary for Education Science.

Course books

The recommended grammar book is English Grammar in Use Book with Answers and Interactive eBook: Self-Study Reference and Practice Book for Intermediate Learners of English [Lingua inglese] (Inglese) Copertina flessibile – 12 febbraio 2016.  Other texts, articles and materials used in class will be available on blended.uniurb.it

Assessment

Written and oral exam.

The student will only be admitted to the oral exam on passing the written exam.  The written exam is valid for the following two exam sessions.  For example if the student sits and passes the written exam in January 2021, he/she may take the oral exam either in that same exam session (Jan/ Feb 2021), in the summer exam session (May/June 2021) or in the autumn exam session (Aug/ Sept 2021).  Should the student fail these attempts, he/she must repeat the written exam in January 2022. Should the student take and pass the written exam, for example, in August, this exam will remain valid until July of the following year.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Students with learning difficulties should make themselves known to the teacher before or at the latest at the beginning of the course so that necessary modifications can be made and help can be given.
