Learning Objectives

Aim of the course is to give students a knowledge of the fundamentals of sociology necessary to their formation and useful to interpret in sociological terms both the experiences of everyday life (family relations, peer relations, intimate relations) and broader social phenomena as diverse as youth unemployment, raising inequalities, populism and the impact of digital media. As the course progress, students will expand their sociological imagination and will learn to question the taken for granted nature of many aspects of social life and of the common sense knowledge, enabling them to think sociologically.

Program

The course presents the fundamental concepts of sociological analysis, which will be discussed through the following thematic units:

- “The human being as capable of agency” discusses concepts of action, interaction, relation, institution, role and system.

- “The human being as capable of symbolic elaboration” discusses the concepts of culture, socialization, communication and religion.

- “The human being as subject of power” discusses the concepts of power, conflict, structure, stratification, mobility, inequalities and deviance.

- “The human being as collective being” discusses concepts of collective behaviour, group, movement, organization, state, nation and globalization.
