Learning Objectives
The course aims to make students acquire knowledge of topography and cartography. Starting from the first graphic expressions of space, declining the respective theoretical-practical processes, we will arrive at the practical use of Compass, GIS, GPS and other instruments and their application in the geomorphological and geological field.
In the second part of the course, carried out mainly through exercises, the basic knowledge will be provided for a profitable use of the topographic map as a fundamental tool for reporting the geological and geomorphological data collected on the ground. The knowledge on the use of GIS will mainly be based on various practical computer exercises with data provided both in vector and raster format.

Bridging Courses
Prerequisites are not foreseen
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
- the student must acquire a good ability to use the cartography and the dedicated software and be able to independently develop projects on the typology of the exercises performed in the classroom.
- the student must be able to realize a report in electronic format to communicate the results obtained from the development of the project.
- during the oral examination the student will have to explain, with appropriate language, the topics illustrated during the theoretical lessons or during the practical exercises.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Supporting Activities
The materials for the practical exercises will be provided during the course. The software will be available in the laboratories where the exercises will take place
Get out on the ground to use topographic tools and maps.
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Lessons, guided exercises, field laboratory.
- Attendance
No obligations are imposed, even if the frequency of the lessons is highly recommended, especially that of practical exercises in the laboratory
- Course books
L. Aruta, P. Marescalchi - CARTOGRAFIA Lettura delle carte. Dario Flaccovio Editore
- Assessment
Report on a practical or theoretical topic chosen by the student pertaining to the study subject.
Practical test of construction of an elevation profile and reading of a topographic map.
Oral examination.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
Additional Information for Non-Attending Students
- Teaching
Consultation and study of the course material available online and chat.
- Attendance
No special obligations are imposed, even if at least the frequency of practical lessons in the laboratory and on the ground is strongly recommended.
