This course is entirely taught in a foreign language and the final exam can be taken in the foreign language.

Learning Objectives

The course aims at both making students achieve a B1 (CEFR) level of Spanish language and giving them the basic elements for a metalinguistic reasoning on Spanish phonetics, phonology and morphology.

Program

1. Spanish phonetics and phonology:

  • Introduction to phonetics and phonology: basic elements.
  • Articulatory phonetics and phonation.
  • Vowels.
  • Consonants.
  • Syllables.
  • Accent.
  • Phonetic and phonological transcription.

2. Spanish morphology:

  • Introduction to morphology: theoretical concepts.
  • Inflection.
  • Derivation.
  • Word formation.
  • Morphological segmentation.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding: students acquire the theoretical fundamentals of Spanish phonetics, phonology and morphology. They learn how phonation works and understand the specifics of sounds of Spanish language, as well as its word formation processes.
Applying knowledge and understanding: students will be able to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge to the metalinguistic analysis of and reasoning on Spanish phonetics, phonology and morphology.
Making judgements: students will be able to judge the formal correcteness (both phonetically and morphologically) of Spanish words and sentences.
Communication skills: students master a B1 (CEFR) level of Spanish language.
Learning skills: students acquire instruments and notions necessary to approach the study of Spanish language and linguistics.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

The monographic course is completed by lectures held by native speaker professors.

  • Antonio Quilis, Principios de fonología y fonética españolas, Madrid: Arco Libros (Cuadernos de Lengua Española), 2010, pp. 7-30 and 37-75.
  • Manuel Alvar Ezquerra, La formación de palabras en español, Madrid: Arco Libros (Cuadernos de Lengua Española), 2019, chaps. 3 and 4.
  • Didactic material uploaded to the course's web page: blended.uniurb.it.

The following textbook is also recommended: 

  • Javier Muñoz-Basols, Nina Moreno, Inma Taboaba e Manuel Lacorte, Introducción a la lingüística hispánica: teoría y práctica, Oxon: Routledge, 2017, pp. 109-148.
Assessment

Characteristics of the exam: the acquisition of the course’s theoretical contents and competences will be assessed through a written exam (in Spanish) which consists of open questions and practical exercises (i.e., phonological and phonetic transcription and description, morphological segmentation, etc.). The use of dictionary is not allowed.
Duration: 90 minutes.
Evaluation criteria: accuracy in referring to theories, models and instruments; conceptual connections; ability to re-elaborate contents; pertinence and argumentative correctness; formal correctness. The exam is also aimed at the linguistic assessment of students. Grammar and precision of language are two of the criteria taken into consideration.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

As for the other parts of the exam (writing/listening/speaking), please see the specific section of the vademecum.

In order to take the parts of the exam (the monographic one included) students must register on the specific section of the Moodle platform (blended.uniurb.it). To have the exam recorded in their career booklet, students must also register through their Esse3 personal area.
