Learning Objectives
INDEPENDENT USER B2
Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
PROFICIENT USER C1
Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
Program
First Semester Reading Comprehension
The course will focus on a variety of reading texts taken from B2 level sources.
Readings will be taken from: textbooks, academic sources, newspapers, magazines, the internet, novels, fiction and nonfiction sources.
Second Semester Reading Comprehension
The course will focus on a variety of reading texts taken from B2 and C1 level sources.
Readings will be taken from: textbooks, academic sources, newspapers, magazines, the internet, novels, fiction and nonfiction sources.
First and Second Semester Writing
Four main types of writing will be taught and practiced.
Expository, descriptive, persuasive and narrative writing.
Writing topics include – University- Travel- Money- Music- Books reviews- The media -Special occasions- Health and fitness- Dreams- Rules and regulations- Recent and past experience- Stories- Famous people-The Internet-Inventions- Requests- Complaints- Interpreting data.
