Learning Objectives

Knowledge and understandingsç

Knowledge and understanding of the historical and institutional evolution of the central educational agencies, with particular reference to the childhood dimension.

Applying knowledge and understanding:

the ability to contextualise the school system, in terms of regulations and programmes, in contemporary social history.

Making judgement:

to develop, through different sources of historical reconstruction, the capacity of autonomous critical-interpretive elaboration.

Communication skills:

to know and use the disciplinary vocabulary.

Learning skills:

Knowing how to construct an autonomous pathway for an in-depth study of specific themes addressed in the course.

The course, starting from the lessons of Ariès and De Mause, is aimed at analysing the history of education by looking at family, school, gender identity, play and work, forms of parental attachment and the emotional relationship between children and adults, denouncing the widespread phenomena of early sexualisation and exploitation of childhood. The course emphasises the value of the 'age of the child' and its central role in the development of humanity.

Program

The course will cover the following topics:

  • The diversity and articulation of educational-historical study;
  • The history of education and the main social fields of research;
  • The historical and theoretical foundations of the history of childhood, international and national production;
  • The discovery of childhood, from Ariés to DeMause, from Bertoni Jovine to Trisciuzzi, from Becchi to Cambi
  • Childhood and school
  • Childhood, family and parental relations
  • Childhood and gender identity
  • Childhood-related phenomena such as early sexualisation or exploitation

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Concerning the discipline, the student should show 

  • the mastery of the basic knowledge related to the discipline of History of Education;  
  • an understanding of the fundamental concepts of the History of Education and their educational implications; 
  • the ability to understand and critically analyse Educational History in the light of the specific knowledge acquired in the pedagogical and historical fields;
  • the ability to use knowledge and concepts to design educational and didactic interventions.

Teaching

The course is structured in the form of lectures followed by discussion (during which students have to reflect and discuss, together with the lecturer, on specific aspects of the discipline and its contents), in-depth seminars and possible exercises.
