Learning Objectives
The course aims to raise awareness of the factors that influence the state of health and the causes of disease, to define the concept of a risk factor for human health, to make known some of the most common chronic-degenerative and infectious diseases, especially in childhood, providing the basic knowledge on the tools and methods of preventive medicine and health education, particularly in childhood.
Program
Definition and Hygiene purposes. Definition of health. Inequalities in health. Main factors affecting the transition from health to disease: factors relating to the physical, biological, social and personal behavior. Notions of demography and general epidemiology. The most important measures in epidemiology. The positive and negative health indicators. The risk factors. Epidemiology of infectious diseases: sources of infection, mode of transmission of pathogens. Primary, secondary and tertiary disease prevention. Defensive mechanisms from the infectious diseases: the immune system. The prophylaxis of infectious diseases: measures aimed to the sick, the mode of transmission and immunoprophylaxis. Compulsory and recommended vaccinations. From prevention to health education. Health education with particular reference to the age of development. Generality of some developmental disorders: exanthematous diseases, meningitis, acute gastroenteritis. Some infectious diseases by incorrect lifestyle: AIDS, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C. Epidemiology and prevention of some chronic-degenerative diseases of greatest social interest (cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes). Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding: The student, through the participation of frontal lessons and the individual study, will develop knowledge and understanding about the determinants of health-disease continuum, the epidemiological assessment, primary prevention models and behavioral, environmental and food risk factors that most threaten health in different age groups, with particular attention to child and adolescent age.
Applying knowledge and understanding: The student will know how to evaluate the presence of protective and risk factors in the practice of his profession, he will be able to assess the possibility and the need to take simple and complex preventive actions in its professional environment.
Making judgments: The student will have developed behaviors able to interpret the demographic, epidemiological and statistical data supplied from registers and databases, and to select the correct scientific information, identifying potential "target" of interest of their activities.
Communication skills: The student will be able to consciously use a relevant language about the health and educational sciences, recognizing both traditional and innovative ways and tools of communication.
Learning skills: The student will be able to apply learning methods and tools to address the issues studied in the course, and he will be capable to autonomously expand its knowledge. He will acquire and will use scientific information necessary to assess the validity of their professional activities.
