Learning Objectives
The course aims to present Russian culture as a text, which embodies longue-durée values, the so-called konstanty russkoj kul'tury.
At the same time, the course aims to enable the students to effectively communicate what they have learnt and to argue for their own view.
Program
1. Culture. Russian culture: periodization.
2. The Slavs before Baptism. The Zadruga.
3. Christianization and its cultural consequences.
4. The long Russian Middle Age. The rise of Moscow. Moscow the Third Rome.
5. Power and Russian culture in XVI-XVII centuries.
6. Characters of XVII century: samozvanstvo. Avvakum and the schism.
7. The renovatio Petri. Russian neoclassicism and baroque.
8. Russia after Peter the Great. Catherine II and her influence on Russian culture. The rise of Russian intelligencija.
9. Čaadaev. The Occidentalists. The Slavophiles. Ideological radicalization during 19th c.
10. Culture and art in 19th c. The Russian writer and his status. The great Russian literature.
11. Life at the eve of Russian Revolution. The Revolution as a cultural event.
12. The culture of the "new Soviet man". "Differently-thinking-people". A day in the life of a Soviet boy.
13. The raspad. The savage Nineties.
14. The new Russian conscience of the 2000's.

Extra materials will be given out in class.
- Assessment
The exam consists of 5 open-ended questions and it lasts 1 hour.
In addition to the content, the evaluation will also specifically consider the students' ability of clearly, coherently, and effectively communicating and arguing for his own views.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Notes
