Learning Objectives

The course aims to make known the factors that condition the state of health and the causes of disease, to define the concept of risk factors for human health, to make known some of the most common infectious and chronic-degenerative pathologies, to provide basic knowledge of the tools and methods of preventive medicine and health education.

Program

Definition and purposes of hygiene.

Definition of health. Main factors that influence the transition from health to disease: risk factors related to the physical, chemical, biological, social and personal behavior.

Primary, secondary and tertiary disease prevention.

Notions of demography and general epidemiology. The most important measures in epidemiology. The positive and negative health indicators. The risk factors. Epidemiological studies.

Epidemiology and prophylaxis of infectious diseases: etiology, sources of infection, modalities of transmission of pathogenic germs. Prophylaxis: measures aimed at the patient and the methods of transmission. Immune system and immunoprophylaxis. The main infectious diseases with airborne, fecal-oral, and incorrect lifestyle.

Epidemiology and prevention of some chronic-degenerative diseases of major social interest (tumors, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes). Hygiene of the social environment.

Introduction to food and nutrition hygiene.

Environmental hygiene: the main sources of air and water pollution and health effects.

Notions of public health: The international health organization. The National Health Service.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding. Through participation in frontal teaching activities and individual independent study, the student will develop knowledge and understanding skills regarding the determinants of the health - disease continuum, epidemiological assessment, primary prevention models and behavioral, environmental and food risk factors that most undermine health.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. The student will be able to evaluate the presence of protective and risk factors in the practice of his professional activity, he will be able to evaluate the possibility and the need to undertake simple and complex preventive actions in the professional environment.

Judgment autonomy. The student will have acquired knowledge that will allow him to interpret epidemiological and statistical data provided by registers and databases, select the correct scientific information to propose appropriate preventive interventions in the context of his activities.

Communication skills. The student will be able to consciously use a language pertinent to the disciplines of the biomedical area, communicating an appropriate message of education and promotion to health through the use of both traditional and innovative tools.

Learning ability. The student will be able to implement learning methods and tools to deepen the topics studied in the course, to independently expand and update their knowledge.
