Learning Objectives
The course will provide the students the tools to acquire language competence and performative skills in English in the 4 linguistic abilities at B2- C1 level of the ECRF. Developing language awareness will be a priority and students will acquire the communicative competence to use English in the professional and academic contexts .
Focus will be put on the Use of English in the subject-specific area of Tourism and in the
academic, professional and occupational contexts, with an international bias. A the end of the course the students will be able to:
-describe places and attractions
-design tours
-comment data, measures, graphs, etc
- offer advice
-handle complaints
-deal with the public
-discuss and debate topics of general and subject specific interest
-make presentations on the subject-specific area of tourism and related contexts
The student will also be able to
· Understand subject-specific audio-video, written and oral texts , distinguish language registers and extract useful information, data, etc.
· Write subject-specific texts ( correspondence, documents, reports, project works etc)
· Present scientific articles and essays
· Discuss on issues related to tourism and related fields
· Develop and structure an argument with academic sources
· Discuss and present a topic in a formal manner
Program
English: Grammar, syntax, vocabulary; Linguistic functions at B2-C1 of the ECRF;Reading comprehension ; writing practice (note taking, e-mails,summaries, informal/formal communication;articles, presentations, etc); Developing language awareness will be a priority ; students will learn to use the language for communicative and subject-specific purposes Students will read and analyse authentic materials ( audio-video-written ) whose contents fall within the domain of tourism and focus their attention on the characteristics of the communicative messages( linguistic/pragmatic, etc);
The course will take into consideration topics such as: transport and travel, types of accommodation, weather and climate, environment, geographical features and attractions, niche tourism (sport, luxury,cultural, nautical, business, educational, etc etc) and any other topic the students may be interested in .
