WRITTEN
objective: Acquire a high level of written language particularly of the commentaire (commentary) technique regarding current affairs texts ( speeches, courtroom speeches, essays…)
First approach to translating [thème- version]
TRANSLATION
- Overview of main tools available to the translator (glossaries, dictionaries, reference texts, Internet sites….)
- Reflections on general principles of the translation from and to French
- Translation workshops: individual and collective translations, group analysis of translation choices, “defense”(justification) of individual translation
Text genres: novelsi (for adults and youngsters), comic strips, theatre, poems, songs, essays, articlesi…
COMMENTAIRE - COMMENTARY
- Initial analysis of text to write a commentary of
- Detailed analysis of writing procedure
- Organisation of ideas and editing
- Practise editing of commentary commentaire
ORAL EXAM
Objective : increase the students’ fluency to allow them to sustain different kinds of discourse (presentations, debates, political speeches, lectures and so on.)
- ability to produce structured and smooth discourse following a structured and logical organisation of ideas which helps the listener to understand and recall the most important points
- ability to make clear and structured descriptions
- ability to present complex topics to a public audience, structuring and adapting the discourse to the audience in question
- HOW TO MAKE A PERSUASIVE SPEECH
- organisation of the discourse
- knowledge and mastery of verbal and non-verbal language
- listen to and understand the public
Main themes : current affairs, culture, bilinguialism, society, Francophonie, literature, history…
During the second term, students will be invited to present a lesson to their classmates based on a theme of their choice concerning French culture.
- HOW TO EDIT A TRANSLATION
- brief introduction to editing translation
- the choice of book (analysis of publishing houses and their series)
- writing statement of text and translation
*In the first semester students will be asked to choose a novel by an Italian author and simulate a translation to submit to a publshing house.
The student must: choose a novel (the course tutor must approve it beforehand), translate the first chapter or a particularly salient abstract ( about ten pages), prepare a description of the reading (technical information, synopsis, critical comment, author’s biography and bibliography)
