Learning Objectives
This is a short course to provide basic information and tools that are at the basis and commonly used to solve the most bioinformatics classic issues such as consultation of databases, alignments and multi alignments.
Program
concepts and principles of bioinformatics, matrices for similarity ( PAM and BLOSUM matrices), penalization of insertions and deletions in the alignment, alignment algorithms ( Dot plot, Needleman-Wunsch, Smith-waterman), multi-alignments (clustal W), searching in databases with euristic methods (FASTA and the BLAST family), searching with the profile method in databases (PSI-BLAST as example)
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Students will acquire the following skills:
1- learning and discussing topics covered in class
2- proving to be able to solve problems starting from biological data found in the main biological databases.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
