Learning Objectives
The course is aimed at the acquisition of basic theoretical and methodological principles for operating in a chemical analytical laboratory: safety, knowledge of the tools, preparation of solutions, knowledge of chemical balances in aqueous solution, methodologies for the quantitative determination of substances of pharmaceutical interest and toxicological, hints of inorganic qualitative analysis with references to the Official Pharmacopoeia.
Program
Introduction to the course and basic concepts (Pharmacopoeia, chemical analysis, error, significant figures, concentrations, laboratory equipment)
Safety, general concepts
Acid-base balances, pH calculation, pH measurements and indicators. Solubility, redox and complexation equilibria.
Quantitative analysis: volumetric methods (acid-base, precipitation, complexometric and redox titrations), gravimetric methods.
Outlines of inorganic qualitative analysis.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
- The student will have to show the mastery of the safety rules, the functioning of the instruments, the knowledge of equilibrium in solution and the learning of classical quantitative chemical analytical techniques. He will also have to demonstrate knowledge of the latest instrumental techniques.
- The student must show the ability to choose and apply the most appropriate quantitative analytical techniques for the determination of compounds belonging to the Official Pharmacopoeia. The use of the displacement of equilibria in solution to achieve certain objectives (variation of solubility, fractional precipitation, masking of ionic species in solution, etc.). It will also have to show the ability to express a critical choice of the most appropriate analysis method independently, therefore independently, producing effective results.
- The student must demonstrate that he has developed communication skills suitable for the presentation of the data obtained during the analyzes, the calculations performed and the final result using the appropriate specific terminology. The ability to propose one's own results in both analytical and synthetic form.
- The student must show good autonomy in carrying out quantitative analyzes of substances of pharmaceutical interest described in the Official Pharmacopoeia and have the ability to carry out research in literature and / or on the network of alternative and innovative methods in order to maintain training continuous and always updated.
