Learning Objectives

The course aims to illustrate the moments, the methods and the means through which the recovery and the study of classical antiquity in European culture from the 14th to the 20th century were matured;  focus on the discovery of Greek art.

Program

The topics of the course concern antiquarian studies, the history of collecting antiquities, the first excavation, the formulation of the concept of "archeology" and "archaeological source". The course will then focus on the critical fortune and impact in Western culture of Greek and Roman antiquities, considering Antonio Canova's role as Commissioner of Antiquities and Fine Arts of the Papal State.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The candidate must demonstrate through an interview to have learned and processed independently the topics covered during the lessons, applying them to the critical discussion of the various aspects considered. These concern both the mechanisms of the recovery of the classical past in its material evidences as well as the joints for their critical study. In these areas the candidate will have to show that he is able to adequately recognize the differences peculiar to different centuries, the materials to which critical thought has been addressed, applying them to the monumental and artistic manifestations of ancient Greece.
