Learning Objectives
Provide the historical-literary knowledge for the contextualization of an author and a work
acquire the skills of critical analysis of a nineteenth-century and twentieth-century text
acquire the ability to identify the forms of the narration
acquire the ability to identify the various techniques of narration
identify the author's thought and message through the representation of the protagonists' vicissitudes
Program
After some introductory lessons on the characteristics of the fairy tale and the main peculiarities of the novel genre in ancient literature, the course will focus on the novel between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The general characteristics of the novel and its evolution over time will be studied. We will focus later on the representation of the vicissitudes of the protagonists in some Italian novels. In particular, 'romance' elements will be identified in the supervised construction of the Promessi Sposi. Finally, we will pass to the examination of the fictional and fairytale elements in the novels of I. Calvino Il barone rampante and Il visconte dimezzatoThrough the analysis of the representation of the fairytale elements we will try to identify the ideology and poetics of the authors.

knowledge and understanding: a solid knowledge and understanding of some chapters of the Promessi Sposi and of the two novels by Calvino is required
applied knowledge and understanding: ability to decode the texts in question, to contextualize the authors and works within a specific literary context
autonomy of judgment: knowing how to critically reflect on the novels in question, knowing how to question commonplaces on the exegesis of novels and determine whether or not they have a scientific validity.

ability to learn: Development of technical knowledge and formal reasoning skills necessary to (i) undertake the analysis of the texts in question in a critical and independent way; (ii) development and critical elaboration of an overall exegesis on the different ways of representing fictional and fairy-tale elements (iii) identification of the formal and thematic peculiarities of the different novels

Written test with open and closed questions.

Evaluation criteria:
30 cum laude: excellent: excellent knowledge of the contents, critical and personal reworking, precise and adequate language
27-30 excellent: broad knowledge of the contents; appropriate language; organicity of the discourse, coherent and effective arguments
24-26: good: adequate knowledge of the contents, appropriate language; good organization of arguments
21-23 discreet: more than enough knowledge, overall correct language, suitable arguments
18-20 sufficient: relative knowledge of the contents with some imprecision and / or simplification of concepts, simple language with some improprieties, linear exposition
Insufficient evidence: serious gaps in knowledge and / or misunderstandings in concepts, inadequate and incorrect language, incoherent exposure.
