Learning Objectives

The course will provide knowledges about the roles and functions of the biomarkers frequently used in Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology, as well as their diagnostic-prognostic usefulness  in the Research and Laboratory Medicine fields.

With particular attention to the main metabolic pathways and biomarkers involved in health and pathology and the automation in Laboratory Medicine.

Program

Clinical Biochemistry approaches for diagnosis, prognosis and disease progession

Example of laboratory exams; biological samples; variability (pre- and post-analyses); sensitivity and specificity;
Main characteristics of biomarkers and their applications in laboratory Medicine.

Utility of Clinical Biochemistry in Nutrition profile
Standards and appropriateness; Diet; Essential nutrients and energy requirements; Intolerance and hypersensitivity; Eating disorders and nutrition; Obesity; New frontiers

Main analytical methods applied in Laboratory medicine (chemical, enzymatica, immunochemical, fluorescence, cytometry, Recombianant DNA)

Molecular diagnosis by Clinical Molecular Biology: main clinical applications.
Main molecular defects, mutation, deletion;  main diagnostic strategies. Nucleic acid, PCR, Real time PCR, PCR ASO, Next generation sequencing.

Automation in Laboratory Medicine. How intelligent, automated laboratory tools contribute to more efficient laboratory management: More advanced testing services. AI-based workflows and procedures. Examples of automation in Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Molecular Biology, and Hematological Microscopy.

Bridging Courses

It is  strongly suggested to have performed the exam of Clinical Biochemistry (@ Biological Sciences Course) or Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology (@Biotechnology Course)

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The course will allow to learn the functions of the main diagnostic-prognostic biomarkers, to improve the knowledges in the Laboratory Medicine field.

The Dublin Descriptors will be the teaching goals

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Assessment

Oral exam

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
