Learning Objectives
The course aims to define the state of health, and to know the main causes and factors of risk factors for human health; it will be defined the measures to prevent, limit or eliminate the spread of communicable and non-communicable diseases; it will also be defined the main infectious and chronic-degenerative diseases and the main environmental problems connected with health, in the field of motor and sports activities, also.
Program
Definition and purposes of Hygiene. Definition of health. Determinants of health-disease transition. General principles of demography and epidemiology. Data collection. Measurement of the frequency of diseases. Health indicators. The risk factor.
Epidemiological studies with particular attention to descriptive or analytical ones. Fundamentals of medical and environmental microbiology: structure and classification of microorganisms. Parasite-host interactions; pathogens.
General epidemiology of infectious diseases: etiology, distribution, reserves; modes of transmission, routes of penetration, and elimination of infectious agents.
General principles of prevention. The various levels of prevention. The prevention of infectious diseases: prophylaxis aimed at the sick, the methods of transmission. The body's defenses against infections. Active and passive immunoprophylaxis. Mandatory and recommended vaccines. Chemoprophylaxis.
General aspects of epidemiology and prophylaxis of the following infectious diseases:
- Infectious diseases with prevalent airborne spread (Influenza, Meningitis, Measles),
- Infectious diseases with prevalently enteric spread (Hepatitis A, Typhoid fever, Acute gastroenteritis),
- Infectious diseases with prevalent blood and/or sexual spread (AIDS, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C). Tetanus.
Multifactorial model of disease: genetic, behavioral, environmental risk factors, and chronic-degenerative diseases; tumors, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory infections. Causes, spread, and prevention of allergies.
General aspects regarding the pollution of the main environmental matrices (water, air, soil, indoor) and effects on health.
Food hygiene: chemical contamination and microbial contamination of food (infections, toxic infections, and food poisoning). Nutritional hygiene: food needs and malnutrition due to deficiency and excess of nutrients. The BMI and the food pyramid.
The international and national health system.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding. Through the participation in lectures and individual independent study, the student will develop knowledge and understanding about the determinants of health and diseases, epidemiological evaluation, various levels of prevention, and risk factors in the environmental, behavioral, and food fields that more undermine health in various age groups.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. The student will be able to evaluate the presence of risk factors in the practice of his professional activity; particularly, he will evaluate the behaviors and lifestyles of the subjects who practice physical activity and sports, also through the knowledge of the research methodology.
Autonomy of judgment. The student will have developed behaviors capable of interpreting the epidemiological and statistical data provided by databases and registers, selecting the correct scientific information, identifying the potential "targets" of interest for their activities.
Communication skills. The student will be able to consciously use a language relevant to the disciplines of the bio-sanitary area and of motor and sports sciences, and to recognize appropriate methods and tools of communication, traditional and innovative.
Learning skills. The student will be able to implement learning methods and tools to deepen the topics studied in the course, to autonomously update and expand their knowledge
Methods of ascertaining the learning outcomes acquired by the student. Verification of the achievement of learning outcomes takes place through the administration of questionnaires in the presence of the teacher.

Frontal lessons.

Attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended.
Basic knowledge of biology and statistics is required.

- Assessment
The exam will be oral. The knowledge acquired and the ability to correlate the issues and solve problems of a practical nature will be assessed. The exhibition capacity will also be judged with particular attention to an appropriate scientific language.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
