Learning Objectives

The educational objective is to convey to students fundamental knowledge of epidemiology and pathophysiology of the role of physical and sports activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases and their complications in various ages and physiological conditions of life. Elements of knowledge will be provided on sports fitness, on the correct nutrition and hydration of the athlete, on the functional, anthropometric and body composition assessment, on the main internal diseases related to physical and sporting activity, doping and sports activity in athletes otherwise skilled.

By integrating with the other teaching courses, this training course is aimed at providing the tools to set up and plan physical and sporting activity in healthy individuals and identify the risks and benefits in those suffering from various diseases.

Program

Physical activity and sedentary lifestyle. Evolutionary, epidemiological, preventive, pathophysiological, health determinants and lifestyle modification interventions in chronic non-communicable diseases.

Biochemistry and metabolism of physical and sports activity. Energy systems and substrates and their role in sports, bio-energetic classification of sports.

Sports fitness. Regulatory aspects of competitive and non-competitive sports fitness, medical-sports examination, sudden death "from sport".

Sports medicine aspects of the physiological efficiency of the elderly. Definition of the elderly, age and sports performance, master sports, pathophysiology of aging and guidelines for physical activity in old age.

Obesity of the developmental age and of the adult. Classification, epidemiology, causes and risk factors, associated diseases, preventive and therapeutic role of physical activity.

Weight management in the athlete. Role of weight in sports, problems related to "weight loss", eating disorders in athletes, the "triad of the female athlete".

Anthropometry, body composition. Main anthropometric parameters, methods, tools for measuring and evaluating body composition.

Physical and sporting activity in gender and in pregnancy. Gender differences and sports performance. Indications and contraindications for physical and sporting activity during pregnancy.

Physical and sporting growth and activity. Pathophysiological aspects, early specialization: related problems and pathologies.

The prescription of physical exercise. "Exercise is medicine": activity and physical exercise adapted to the various exercise-sensitive pathologies, general and specific assessment and prescription protocols (solid organ transplant, HIIT).

The functional evaluation of the athlete. Indications, specifications, physiological parameters involved, tools and limits of functional assessment.

Thermoregulation, hydration and physical and sporting activity. Body temperature, heat and cooling, “heat” disorders and pathologies, dehydration, hydration, hypo-natremia and sport.

Basics of nutrition and physical and sporting activity. General aspects, the Mediterranean diet and other diets (zone, ketogenic, paleo diet, etc.) protein, lipid and carbohydrate intake in athletes, timing of intake, nutrition for sports children, vegetarian-vegan athletes.

Physical and sporting activity and specific pathologies. Neuro-degenerative, neoplastic, dysmetabolic, cardiovascular, etc.

Doping. Historical notes, national and international legislation, classification, methods and substances, associated diseases, anti-doping.

Sports activity in disabled athletes. History and evolution of the concept of disability, organizational structures of sport for the disabled, the role of sport in disability, classification, main disability frameworks, associated conditions and recommendations, agonist suitability in athletes with disabilities.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The student must show basic knowledge of the main pathologies of sports medicine.

You will need to know how to relate sports medicine with the other subjects covered by the course of study.

The student will have to show an understanding of the concepts and theories set forth in the program.

The student will have to show the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in daily practice.

From the Academic Year 2020/21 the indications for teaching and assessment for students of other Degree Courses who have chosen the teaching of MED / 09 Sports Medicine (Letter L-Z) Motor, sports and health sciences L- 2, as an optional exam, are similar to students enrolled in the Study Program of the School of Motor Sciences - Department of Biomolecular Sciences.
