Learning Objectives

Understanding of the iconographic-iconological method through the analysis of works of art and through the history of the metod

Understanding the concepts of iconography and iconology

Knowledge of the profile of some scholars protagonists of the method like Aby Warburg and Erwin Panofsky

knowledge of the contents of the essays of Aby Warburg and Erwin Panofsky analyzed during the course and in the course  books

Learning the method of analysis of a work of art with the iconographic-iconological method

Ability to analyze and comment on works of art analyzed during the course and in the course books

Program

The course aims to clarify the iconographic-iconological method through the profile by some scholars like Aby Warburg and Erwin Panofsky and  through the iconographic and iconological analysis by some works by art chosen between the 15th and 20th centuries: The Annunciation by Leonardo da Vinci, The game of chess of Sofonisba Anguissola, The rest during the flight into egypt byCaravaggio, Judith and Holofernes of Artemisia Gentileschi, The raft of the Medusa by Gericault, The art and caresses by Fernand Khnopff, The hand-shell by  Dora Maar.

-The student must demonstrate to know the iconographic and iconological method

-The student must demonstrate to know the perrsonality and work of Aby Warburg

-The student must demonstrate to know the personality and work of Erwin Panofsky

“To understand the contents of the course books”

- To know how to use the lessons notes (for the attended students)

-To know and recognize the subject of the works of art analyzed during the course and in the course books , to be able to indicate the author and the dating.

-To be able to analyze and comment the works of art analyzed during the course with good language skills
