Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide basic notions related to the transmission of texts (manuscripts and printed) and to their philological analysis. Several philological methodologies will be illustrated with special attention to the methods of Lachmann and Bédier and how they were applied to some works of the Italian literature from the origins until the modern age. Some lessons will be devoted to the authorial philology.
Program
The course will be divided into two parts:
1. an overview of some disciplines directly related to philology, such as paleography and codicology; basic notions about the text transmission (manuscripts and printed texts), about the Lachmann' s method (its characteristics and application) and about that of Bédier; notions of authorial philology;
2. the last part of the course will be devoted to the analysis of some significant case studies of the Italian literature in order to teach the students how a critical edition is produced from the census of the survived testimonies to the establishing of the text and the apparatus.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Students are to show possession of mastery of basic knowledge about the genesis and the functioning of the stemmatic method, with particular reference to the stages of recensio, collatio, eliminatio codicum descriptorum and constitutio textus, including the creation of critical apparatus and eventually of the apparatus of sources.
-Students are to demonstrate understanding of concepts and theories learnt during the course and discuss the main limits of the stemmatic method. They are supposed to know and use alternative methods to produce a critical edition. He/she has to be able to analyse the case-study proposed in class in relation to the problems faced by publishers in connection with the applicability of the stemmatic method.
- Students have to achieve the ability to use knowledge and concepts which allow to procede according to the logic of the discipline. In particular, they also have to become able to analyse and interpretate literary texts under philological basis, to read modern critical editions and be able to produce a new one. Students are also required to know and use the main bibliographical entries of the discipline.

- Teaching
Classes, exercises, guided tours. The second part of the course will be held in cooperative learning.

- Innovative teaching methods
Learning by problem solving
The second part of the course will have a seminar nature, in which teacher will provide a didactic strategy of problem solving on a voluntary basis. Students in small groups will be entrusted with philological analysis of texts and collation materials on which they will have to report orally in class.
- Attendance
Before following the lessons it is desirable to have passed the exam of Italian linguistics. The knowledge of the Latin language is highly recommended, although not compulsory. Compulsory attendance for the 80% of the classes hours amount (29 hours).

- Assessment
Oral exam. Since Philology is a technical discipline that requires a specific vocabulary, this choice of an oral exam was made in order to enhance the capability of the individual student in relation to oral skills.
- They will give rise to evaluations of excellence: the student's possession of good critical and in-depth skills; the ability to connect the main topics dealt with in the course; the use of an appropriate language with respect to the specific nature of the discipline.
- They will give rise to discrete evaluations: the student's possession of a mnemonic knowledge of the contents; a relative critical capacity and connection between the themes dealt with: the use of an appropriate language.
- They will give rise to sufficient evaluations: the achievement of minimal knowledge on the subjects dealt with by the student, even if there are some training gaps; the use of inappropriate language.
- They will give rise to negative evaluations: difficulty of orientation of the student with respect to the topics dealt with in the exam texts; training gaps; the use of inappropriate language.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

It is desirable to have passed the exam of Italian linguistics before that of Italian philology. The knowledge of the Latin language is highly recommended, although not compulsory.
