Learning Objectives

The course aims to introduce students to the knowledge of the main methodologies of historical-artistic research and of the most significant phases of the critical debate - both at an Italian and European level - in the different historical periods. The course also aims to provide a method of analysis and interpretation of artworks, and to the acquisition of linguistic and philological tools which are essential for their understanding.

Program

The main theoretical and methodological approaches to art history will be presented commenting images and texts; notions concerning the specificity of different figurative languages and artistic techniques will be addressed, as well as the concepts of style, iconography and iconology, the dynamics that have regulated the relationships between artists and patrons in different periods and contexts, the evaluation of artworks and artists according to the orientations of artistic literature and the history of art criticism, the construction of artistic history and its periodization. Some lessons will be dedicated to reading and comprehension exercises of artworks, thus applying the different approach methods presented during classes.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

In the final oral exam, students will have to demonstrate to possess the basic knowledge related to the methodology of art history, its themes, its problems and its relations with other disciplinary sectors. In addition, students will have to demonstrate the understanding of the concepts and theories envisaged by the course but also the ability to use this knowledge to think according to the specific 'logic' of the discipline and subsequent studies.
