Learning Objectives

The objectives of the course are to give students the opportunity to acquire the linguistic skills necessary to enable them to understand the main ideas of complex texts, and the grammar and vocabulary necessary to enable them to interact on political science topics, in English, with a level of spontaneity appropriate to the Intermediate level. Each session will be delivered by introducing a given political science topic and related vocabulary (first hour) followed by a short lecture on the topic (second hour). The third and fourth hours each week will be devoted to exercises designed to consolidate new vocabulary and grammatical points introduced that week, and to speaking and writing tasks designed to enable students to engage with the topic more spontaneously and in greater depth.

Program

The programme will be delivered by means of two, two-hour sessions weekly during the course of which the focus will be on the main elements in democratic politics today, using the UK as a starting point for understanding and comparison. Consequently, by taking the course the students will have an opportunity not only to improve their English-language skills but also to gain

1. An understanding of the institutional and political structures of the UK and the other principal democracies

2. A knowledge of the UK’s role in the world and its relations with other countries

3. A knowledge of the historical context and socio-political development in these countries

4. A basic understanding of the role of supranational organisations in representing and mediating between countries.

5. A basic understanding of the comparative theories underlying analysis of nations and political organisation
