This course is taught partially in Italian and partially in a foreign language. Study materials can be provided in the foreign language and the final exam can be taken in the foreign language.

Learning Objectives

The objectives of the course are to give students the opportunity to improve their reading and oral comprehension skills and their writing and speaking skills in the English language through a series of practical exercises with a focus on political science. Each session will be delivered by means of a short lecture on the topic for the week (first hour) followed by reading and listening exercises related to the topic (second hour) and concluded with writing and speaking skills related to the topic (third hour).

Program

The programme will be delivered by means of two, three-hour sessions weekly during the course of which the focus will be on the main elements in democratic politics today, using the UK as a starting point for understanding and comparison. Consequently, by taking the course the students will have an opportunity not only to improve their English-language skills but also to gain

1.  An understanding of the institutional and political structures of the UK and the other principal democracies

2.  A knowledge of the UK’s role in the world and its relations with other countries

3.  A knowledge of the historical context and socio-political development in these countries

4.  A basic understanding of the role of supranational organisations in representing and mediating between countries.

5.  A basic understanding of the comparative theories underlying analysis of nations and political organisations

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione (knowledge and understanding): lo studente, al termine del corso, conoscerà i termini lessicali più importanti del linguaggio delle scienze politiche. Inoltre avrà familiarità con gli aspetti del linguaggio specifico del mondo della politica britannica, europea e comparativa e si rifletterà sull’argomento della "globalizzazione”. Acquisirà pure delle competenze con riferimento alla comprensione della lingua parlata e scritta quando i temi riguardano il dibattito politico. 

 Il livello linguistico di riferimento è sempre quello del B1 nel Quadro unico di riferimento europeo, livello intermedio inferiore.

Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione applicate: (applying knowledge and understanding): lo studente sarà in grado di leggere e capire materiali scritti e audio, e  di rispondere in maniera appropriata se interrogato sul contenuto generale.  Sarà inoltre capace di comprendere brani scritti e audio che corrispondono al livello B1 del Quadro unico, se i temi proposti riguardano la politica e i suoi fenomeni.  


Autonomia di giudizio (making judgements): lo studente sarà in grado di individuare ed analizzare le informazioni necessarie per capire sia il tema generale  sia  i punti  specifici di principale importanza  in un brano scritto oppure verbale-audio.

Abilità comunicative (communication skills): lo studente imparerà a: leggere e comprendere il testo e gli altri materiali presentati e produrre un elaborato scritto in tema, e a partecipare in una conversazione al livello linguistico B1.

Capacità di apprendere (learning skills): lo studente avrà modo di applicare le conoscenze linguistiche acquisite in corsi precedenti,  integrandole con il linguaggio specialistico (lessico e strutture), assieme alle nozioni di contenuto apprese nell'ambito degli studi.

Lo studente viene considerato "frequentante" se  avrà preso parte ad almeno il 75% delle lezioni.

Course books

There is no course book as such. I am happy to provide advice concerning useful books, however, all of the teacing materials will be made available vai the Moodle platform.

Assessment

There is one summative assessment consisting of a two-hour exam during the course of which students will be required to translate a short passage of between 250 and 300 words from English to Italian and to write a short essay, in English, on one of the political-science topics presented and discussed as part of the course. Formative assessments will be made available from time to time as the course progresses in accordance with the needs of participants.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
