Teaching in foreign languages
Course with optional materials in a foreign language English
This course is entirely taught in Italian. Study materials can be provided in the foreign language and the final exam can be taken in the foreign language.

Assigned to the Degree Course

Geology and Land-Use Planning (L-34 / L-21)
Curriculum: COMUNE
Date Time Classroom / Location
Date Time Classroom / Location

Learning Objectives

The course aims to make students acquire the knowledge of topography and cartography in practical use for the Geological and Territory Sciences. Starting from the first graphic expressions of space, declining the respective theoretical-practical processes, we will arrive at the practical use of Compass, GIS, GPS and other tools and their application in the geomorphological and geological field.

In the part of the course mainly carried out through exercises, the basic knowledge will be provided for a profitable use of the topographic map as a fundamental tool to report the geological and geomorphological data collected on the ground. Knowledge on the use of GIS will mainly be based on various practical computer exercises with data provided in both vector and raster formats.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding

The student will acquire the knowledge of the systems currently usable for topography and cartography, also understanding the methodological bases.

His level of knowledge and understanding will be measured by evaluating his language and the correspondence of the methodological bases.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

The course is also practical. The student will apply his knowledge during all phases of the course and at the end he will have to be able to implement all his acquired skills.

Both on the field and in the laboratory, the student will have to demonstrate that the acquired knowledge is put to good use with feasible applications.

Autonomy of judgment

The student will also be able to originally develop projects, developing skills that will allow them to face unexpected situations and find original solutions.

You will need to be able to understand whether measurements or data processing are reliable or not.

Communication skills

The student must be able to communicate in different ways (reports, presentations, etc.) the results and summaries of the work done. In addition to individual work, group work will be important where students have to communicate with each other. Students will also be encouraged to present their work at external conferences. You must be able to use specific language, possibly communicable even to non-experts in the sector.

Learning ability

The student will have to be able to learn the new techniques and methodologies autonomously. The student will have acquired the ability, in the light of their knowledge, to propose original solutions in the context of tools and methods.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

Practical exercises are planned both in the classroom and in the field, supported not only by the teacher but also by collaborators. In particular, exercises on territorial information systems will be carried out with the support of Dr. Giulio F. Pappafico for a total of 4 hours.

Dr. Giulio Pappafico will also follow the students in the ground exits in support of the teacher's activity. Support is expected for a total of approximately 16 hours.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

In addition to lectures to address the theoretical aspects of the various topics, the guided exercises in the classroom and the field trips will be quite frequent.

Innovative teaching methods

Personal ang group works in the field  anf indoor using Information Systems a and digital tools.

Attendance

Attendance is not mandatory, even strongly suggested, mainly for indoor and outdoor workshops.

Course books

L. Aruta, P. Marescalchi - CARTOGRAFIA Lettura delle carte. Dario Flaccovio Editore

Assessment

The student will have to produce a report on a practical or theoretical topic of his choice related to the course. During the oral exam will be carried out a practical test of construction of an elevation profile and reading of a topographic map. An oral interview will then be held aimed at assessing the student's preparation and the level of achieved skills.

The evaluation criteria are: the level of mastery of knowledge, the degree of articulation of the response, the level of mastery in the knowledge and application of the different research methodologies. Each of the criteria is assessed on the basis of a four-level scale of values / judgments. Particular weight is assigned to the first two criteria. The criterion relating to the application of research methodologies constitutes a further appreciable requirement.
The mark of the written test is expressed out of thirty.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Additional Information for Non-Attending Students

Teaching

The study can be tackled through the material made available by the teacher on the moodle plate and on the recommended texts. However, it is suggested to participate, if and when possible, in practical exercises in the classroom and in the field.

Attendance

No particular obligations are imposed, although at least the frequency of practical exercises in the classroom and outings on the ground are strongly recommended.

Notes

The course has a very practical character which serves to introduce topographic and cartographic tools that will be useful if not indispensable in the continuation of studies and professional activities, therefore the student's attendance and his direct relationship with the teacher become important learning vehicles.

Students will have to equip themselves with the materials and tools necessary for carrying out the exercises in the classroom and on the ground such as: mechanical pencils and colored pencils, rulers and squares, graph paper, compass, metric tape or laser distance meter, drawing board and country notebook. The teacher will recommend the most appropriate materials and models during the first lessons.

For exits on the ground, materials for individual safety are also required. In addition to suitable clothing for the season and boots with sculpted soles, you also need a high-visibility vest and mountaineering or construction helmet.
