Learning Objectives

Pathway to identify authorship between Giotto, collaborators and the current of the Rimini school in a series of works.

Program

The course focuses on the figure of Giotto starting from the sources and historiography concerning him which have highlighted the reforming role that he had in the field of painting between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries with the change of language from "Greek into Latin, from ancient into modern ". The stages of his intense activity will be proposed through the analysis of the complexes built in Tuscany, Umbria, Romagna, Veneto, Campania, as well as the mobile works of art. Emphasis will be given to the Assisi construction site with the decoration of the upper Basilica with Stories from the life of St. Francis and chapels in the lower Basilica created by his collaborators From frequenting the Assisi construction site, Rimini artists were formed who, starting also from a chapel decorated in the church of San Francesco di Rimini destroyed in the reconstruction of the Malatesta Temple, and by the shaped Crucifix still in place, they have constituted a School with a unitary Giottesque language, expanded in various places. .

At the end of the course the student must have acquired the ability to read the Giotto phenomenon, as well as orient himself in the reading of the work of art so as to understand not only the originality of Giotto, but also the relationship between the autograph work and the one that takes a cue.
