Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide students with knowledge on the characteristics of traditional civilization, philosophical reflections, culture and social life of the Chinese world. Some thematic in-depth studies will be addressed to get to know the China of the past and interpret that of the present, in particular the aspects inherent to the economic, political and cultural modernization of Chinese society in relation to the changes in the world context and international influences.

Program

During the course the following themes will be studied in depth:

  • the problems of multi-ethnic society and pluralism,
  • the main philosophical-religious currents,
  • Confucianism between past and present,
  • social stereotypes on the themes of sentiment and marriage,
  • family planning,
  • the school system ,
  • the condition of women,
  • the phenomenon of Chinese immigration and the Chinese presence in Italy,
  • technology and the media,
  • the role of China in the scenario of the world economy and its relationship with the Vatican.

Furthermore, students will be introduced to the contemporary Chinese world, leading them to grasp the continuity and changes recorded over the centuries through the analysis of some social and economic phenomena and the economic and political relations between China and the Western world.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding: the student knows and understands the definition of Chinese cultural identity.

Applying knowledge and understanding: the student develops an ability to analyze the topics covered during the course.

Making judgments: the student is able to determine autonomous judgments on Chinese cultural phenomena.

Communication skills: students can communicate their knowledge clearly and unambiguously, they can argue and express their considerations in the Chinese cultural context.

Learning skills: the student acquires the methodological tools and bibliographic-critical skills necessary to develop their own research autonomy.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Frontal lessons; viewing of video materials and interactive teaching support; guided discussion.

Assessment

The learning outcomes will be ascertained through an oral test and assessed on the basis of the mastery of the knowledge of the topics chosen for the test.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
