Learning Objectives

The course focuses on antibiotic/antimicrobial resistance, which represents a rising concern for human health worldwide. The students will acquire a general knowledge on: i) the origin of antimicrobial resistance; ii) the selection and spread of resistance determinants both in clinical and environmental settings; iii) the main mechanisms adopted by microorganisms to survive antimicrobial exposure, and iv) the routine techniques used to investigate antimicrobial resistance. In this context, the need for new therapeutic options and novel antimicrobial strategies will be highlighted, by discussing the latest findings on drug discovery, repurposing and improvement by combination approaches.
