Learning Objectives

The primary objectives of this teaching course are to help students make better links between physical activity and pharmacology; improve their knowledge of drugs used to treat (and or to prevent) maladies, disorders and traumas where adapted physical activity is included in therapeutic, rehab and preventive programs. 

Program

First stage. Preliminary basis of biochemistry and physiology. General pharmacology. 

Second stage. Drugs acting on autonomic nervous system.

Third stage. Drugs used in exercise-sensitive maladies:  diabete, hypertension, hypercolesterolemia.  Commonly prescribed drugs in Sport medicine. NSAIDs, glucocorticoids. Analgesics. Local anesthetics. Antimicotics. Drugs of the respiratory system.  Drugs used in orthopedic medicine.

Fourth stage. Antiosteoporotic agents. DMARDS and agents for rheumatoid arthritis. Myorelaxants and antispastic drugs.  Antiparkinson drugs; Hypolipidemic drugs. Drugs affecting coagulation.  Anti-obesity drugs. Hypoglicaemic agents. Antihypertensive drugs.

Knowledge and understanding  - Basic knowledge of fundamental pharmacology and of the studied classes of drugs.

Applying knowledge and understanding - Capacity of understanding the impact of pharmacological therapy.

Making judgements - Capacity of autonomously forming personal and adequate opinions on pharmacological issues

Communication skills - Capacity of writing and explaining pharmacological concepts and issues using the basic terminology of the field.

Learning skills - The students will autonomously update their knowledge in the field; they will also be capable of critically understanding pharmacological issues inherent to their profession..

Attendance is highly recommended. During the course, the lecturer might trace students' presence for statistics purposes.

Assessment

Written questionnaire consisiting in 15 close-ended, multiple choice questions (2/30 or 0/30 for each correct or wrong answers/unanswered questions, respectively). With a minimum of 9 correct answers, the assessment will be integrated with an oral exam (mark expressed as X/30). The final mark  corresponds to the mean of written and viva voce results.

The evaluation will be formulated according to the following criteria:

less than 18: skill level not enough 

18-20: skill level enough 

21-23: skill level satisfactory

24-26: skill level good

27-29: skill level very good •

30-30 with honors: skill level excellent

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
